1. Agreement to Terms

By downloading, installing, or using the Hashcards mobile application ("App"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree to these Terms, do not use the App.

Hashcards is a spaced repetition flashcard application that helps you learn and retain information effectively using the FSRS (Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler) algorithm.

2. Account Types

Guest Accounts

You can use Hashcards without creating an account. Guest accounts store all data locally on your device. If you uninstall the App or lose your device, your data will be permanently lost. We recommend using the backup feature to export your cards and progress regularly.

Registered Accounts

By providing your email address, you can create a registered account that syncs your data across devices. We use passwordless authentication—each sign-in sends a one-time code to your email. You are responsible for maintaining access to your email account, as it is the sole method of authentication.

3. AI-Powered Card Generation

Hashcards offers AI-powered flashcard generation. This feature is designed to make creating flashcards effortless—simply describe what you want to learn, and the AI generates structured, ready-to-study cards for you. This feature allows you to:

Generate question-and-answer flashcards from topics you specify
Create cloze deletion cards for fill-in-the-blank learning
Generate math flashcards with LaTeX-formatted equations
Extract flashcards from images using OCR (optical character recognition) — uses 1 credit per scan
Transcribe handwritten content from images or drawings (coming soon)

Credit-Based System

AI card generation uses a credit-based system:

Free Tier: New users receive 50 free card generation credits
Starter Pack: 50 cards for $0.99
Standard Pack: 200 cards for $2.99
Pro Pack: 500 cards for $4.99
Max Pack: 2,000 cards for $9.99

Credits are one-time purchases, not subscriptions. Credits do not expire and are stored locally on your device and with Apple or Google. To sync your credit balance across devices, provide your email address to link purchases to a Hashcards account.

How Credits Are Used

Credits are consumed for:

Each card generated via AI chat (1 credit per card)
Each image scanned via OCR (1 credit per scan, regardless of cards extracted)

AI-Generated Content Disclaimer

While AI generation makes card creation effortless, the content generated may contain errors, inaccuracies, outdated information, or misinformation. You are solely responsible for reviewing and verifying all AI-generated flashcards before using them for learning. We do not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or reliability of AI-generated content, and we are not liable for any harm, academic consequences, or misinformation resulting from AI-generated cards. The AI is a tool to accelerate your learning workflow—final judgment on content accuracy rests with you.

4. Memory Insights and Statistics

Hashcards provides memory insights and statistics based entirely on your flashcard activity:

Memory Strength: Calculated from your review patterns and card stability metrics
Stability: Measures how long you can remember a card before forgetting (in days)
Difficulty: Reflects how hard specific cards are for you to remember (scale 1-10)
Progress Tracking: Shows new, learning, and mastered cards per deck

These insights are derived solely from your card review activities using the FSRS algorithm. No external data, behavioral tracking, or personal profiling is used to generate these metrics.

5. Image Processing and OCR

When you use the image-based card generation or handwriting transcription features:

Images you upload are processed by our AI service to extract text and generate flashcards
Images are not stored permanently on our servers after processing
Image scanning via OCR consumes 1 card credit per scan
Credits are deducted when processing begins, not when cards are saved
You must have the right to use any images you upload
Do not upload images containing sensitive personal information, copyrighted material you don't have rights to, or illegal content

6. Payments and Refunds

All payments are processed through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store using In-App Purchases (IAP).

Prices are displayed in your local currency as determined by the app store
Both guest and registered users can purchase credits
Credits are stored locally on your device and with Apple or Google after purchase
To sync credits across devices, link your purchases to a Hashcards account using your email
Purchases are final once credits are added
Refund requests must be submitted through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store according to their respective refund policies

7. User Content and Data

You retain ownership of all flashcards, decks, and learning data you create ("User Content"). By using the App, you grant us a limited license to store and sync your User Content solely to provide the service.

You are responsible for:

Creating backups of your data using the export feature
Ensuring your content does not violate any laws or third-party rights
Not using the App to store or transmit illegal, harmful, or offensive content

8. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

Use the App for any unlawful purpose
Attempt to bypass or manipulate the credit system
Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the App
Use automated systems to abuse the AI generation service
Share or sell your account credentials
Upload malicious content or attempt to compromise the service

9. Intellectual Property

The Hashcards App, including its design, features, and underlying technology (including the FSRS algorithm implementation), is protected by intellectual property laws. You are granted a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the App for personal, non-commercial purposes.

10. Service Availability and Offline Functionality

While we aim to keep our services running smoothly, we cannot guarantee uninterrupted availability.

Offline Features (No Internet Required)

The following core features work entirely offline on your device:

Reviewing flashcards and recording your responses
All learning progress and FSRS scheduling calculations
Memory statistics and insights (stability, difficulty, retention)
Creating and editing flashcards manually
Managing decks and organizing your cards

Online Features (Internet Required)

The following features require an active internet connection:

AI-powered card generation from text prompts
Image scanning and OCR (extracting text from images)
Handwriting transcription (coming soon)
Cloud sync across devices (for registered accounts)
Purchasing card generation credits

We reserve the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue any part of the service with reasonable notice when possible.

11. Disclaimer of Warranties

THE APP IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE APP WILL BE ERROR-FREE, SECURE, OR UNINTERRUPTED, OR THAT AI-GENERATED CONTENT WILL BE ACCURATE OR SUITABLE FOR YOUR PURPOSES.

12. Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, INCLUDING LOSS OF DATA, PROFITS, OR LEARNING PROGRESS, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE APP.

13. Changes to Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. We will notify users of material changes through the App or via email for registered users. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.

14. Termination

You may stop using the App at any time. We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these Terms. Upon termination, your right to use the App ceases, but provisions that by their nature should survive will remain in effect.

15. Governing Law

These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with applicable laws, without regard to conflict of law principles.
